Challenge
Inspiring collective action through story
When the Vancouver science centre Science World approached Echo, they had recently launched Symbiosis, a one-off initiative to strengthen science education, workforce readiness, and community impact across British Columbia. The idea was clear but complex. They needed a video that could rally attention, explain the value of the movement, and inspire wide-ranging buy-in.
This wasn’t just an educational explainer. It had to feel human, urgent, and optimistic because Symbiosis was intended to launch a call for cultural alignment around science literacy and equity, a call that would last.
We had to distill a lofty, visionary concept into a short video. And the target audience was broad: educators, policymakers, employers, and funders alike. The story about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) had to stick.
Solution
A short film with big impact
Echo collaborated closely with the Science World team to understand the full scope of their ambitions and to identify the key values that needed to resonate in the video.
We developed a script that balanced:
- Accessibility: using plain language to explain the mission
- Emotion: highlighting the human potential behind STEAM learning
- Momentum: showcasing early wins and inviting future contributions
We combined original interviews, scripted narration, motion graphics, and B-roll footage to create a vivid sense of what Symbiosis is and why it matters now.
Our role also included strategic messaging support, guiding Science World on how best to share the video with partners and funders in order to accelerate the movement’s traction.
Shortly after the launch, Symbiosis was recognized by STEM Learning Ecosystems, a global non-profit advancing equity in STEAM, for formal inclusion in its international cohort.
Result
More reach, more storytelling
The Symbiosis video became the official story of a movement, used in public presentations and media outreach. Science World used it to spark conversations across industries and within government, where the idea of connecting provincial stakeholders around shared STEAM goals found real traction.
And while the Symbiosis project was a one-off, the larger commitment to targeted storytelling wasn’t based on the strength of this video, Science World hired us again and again. To craft a story-driven content strategy for their marketing and donor communications. To recentre their website around story. And to help plan and execute a 30th anniversary campaign to celebrate the people who have made the iconic dome they call home such a pivotal part of British Columbia’s last three decades of history.
One more cool thing...
Deepened expertise for institutions
After such a positive working relationship, Science World came back to us to help them craft a story-driven content strategy for their marketing and donor communications, and then again to help plan and execute a 30th anniversary campaign to celebrate the people who have made the iconic dome such a pivotal part of British Columbia’s last three decades of history.
We’re proud that this project helped deepen our expertise not just in the education sector — where we’ve created anniversary books for institutions like Trinity College School, Salt Lake Community College, and Stratford Hall — but also in the broader institutional space alongside organizations like USP and the PNE.
